Reforestation

Our Approach Takes All Ecosystem Services into Account

“I want to encourage people all over the continent to replicate what I have done in my forest. If every person plants one tree, we could get there.”

Tabi Joda

Agroforestry is a central component of the 2021-2030 UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration: a global effort to accelerate efforts to reverse centuries of damage to forests, wetlands and other ecosystems and chart a sustainable course for the planet.

Our reforestation actions in the Great Green Wall consider both ecosystem resilience, environmental services and economic opportunities.

Many tree planting projects fail because there is no strict maintenance and monitoring in place once the sapling is in the ground. To secure long-term, successful reforestation, A Billion Trees is committed to supporting the labour-intensive, time-consuming (and often costly) maintenance of reforested landscapes. €5 donation covers the seed collection, growing, planting and protection, guaranteeing a new forest to help biodiversity and tackle climate change, because in many semi-arid restoration projects, fewer than half of planted trees survive. Ongoing care is vital in the first years after planting, local work force’s are employed to clear all surrounding grasses, and other competing vegetation to enhance tree survival rates. Saplings are nurtured, with careful monitoring to ensure successful establishment. A Billion Trees ensure that any trees that do not survive are replaced. That is how we are getting the Great Green Wall done one hectare at a time
